The Open 2016: Stenson edges Mickelson in Claret Jug duel

They slugged it out all afternoon with no sign of yielding, but Henrik Stenson landed two huge blows late on to clinch his first major title in magnificent joust for the Claret Jug.
The 40-year-old Swede became the first Scandinavian man to win a major with a three-shot victory over America's Phil Mickelson in the 145th British Open at Royal Troon Sunday.
Stenson, the world No. 6, broke the deadlock by sinking long birdie putts at the 14th and 15th and added two more in the final three holes to card a major record-equalling 63. His final score of 20 under broke Tiger Woods's Open scoring record of 19 under, set in 2000.
The 46-year-old Mickelson, who narrowly missed a 62 on the opening day, shot 65 but fell short in his bid for a sixth major title in the face of Stenson's late onslaught.
The pair put on a sublime masterclass of skill and nerve in a tournament of their own with the nearest chaser, JB Holmes of America, finishing at six under.

The Sunday showdown between Stenson and Mickelson will arguably eclipse the famous "Duel in the Sun" Open between legends Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson down the road at Turnberry in 1977.
